The Rising Tides: Summer Series

In collaboration with @worldconnektors and Mwami, Noha Collective produced the first Rising Tides: Summer Series Toronto Edition. The evening featured a screening of “the olympean series” by Mwami, a panel exploring the interconnected nature of the East African Diaspora within arts and culture with La Sappe, Moogie, and Mike Misaki, and a DJ set by Sekii.

“the olympean collection” is a trilogy of short films directed by @chebs @mbaalamwezi tysevisual & @onomwamii, featuring music from mwami’s debut album, “olympean”, based on characters first appearing in “the protean collection” graphic novel (a paperback zine commemorating mwami’s debut EP).

”This is no adaptation. This collection builds on the original source material, with featured songs weaving together a raw and poetic non-linear narrative that adds dimension and depth to the themes of love, loss, longing and escape — first broached in the graphic novel’s jovial illustrations, all the while retaining the bedtime story nostalgia that served as the zine’s guiding inspiration.

Set against the backdrop of an untamed and otherworldly wilderness, the trilogy loosely follows two young runaway’s who elope into the forest to forever play make believe. As they descend further down rabbit holes, losing all sense of time and tether; wild things, forest dwellers and other forces of nature loom in the underwood, encroaching on our central figures.” - Mwami
